A trip to your local store will send a very clear message. Prepare for the bugs! They are on their way. I saw a tweet the other day with the ‘first kill’ of the season and it was a squished mosquito on someones hand and I know that I felt the impending doom that many likely felt seeing that same tweet! As a Muskoka Wedding Planner I get asked all the time what the secret is to fighting the blackflies and mosquitoes. There are so many different options out there and all of you swear by your own tips and tricks. Many of our outdoor Muskoka cottage weddings own or rent in the same area every year and we tell them to pay particular attention to what the bugs are like on their property (when do they come out? where do they come out? are there areas that do not have many of them? are there areas that are really bad? how long are they out for?) and this helps us plan to a certain extent how to navigate the property and how to instruct the wedding guests.
What works for some people doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. Some venues I know have provided those clip on contraptions for every guest attending the ceremony (costly!), some do the mosquito magnet thing around the perimeter of the property, some incorporate citronella candles into their table decor or tiki torches. If all of these efforts fail it is great to include a small bottle of bug repellent in their Muskoka wedding weekend welcome bags or in the bathroom baskets to poke fun. It is what it is at the end of the day and most of our Muskoka wedding guests are great sports and maybe just dance a little crazier. What works for you? How do you deal with the bugs in Muskoka?
